Après 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3, le Noirs peuvent continuer avec 5.... e6, variante Scheveningen (B80) et préparent le petit roque. Avec 6.g4, l'attaque Keres Attack a pour objectif de déloger le cavalier des Noirs en f6 avec 7.g5. Les Noirs peuvent répondre par 6...h6.

Les Blancs peuvent aussi jouer 6.Be2 et la position après 6...a6, est une transposition de KAN avec d6 ou de Nadjdorf avec e6. La partie peut continuer avec 7.0-0 Be7 8.f4 0-0 ou 7.O-O Qc7 8.f4 Nc6

Les autres alternatives des Blancs sont 6.Be3 et 6.f4.

Ainsi les joueurs de la variante KAN doivent connaître les ouvertures suvantes à cause des transpositions.

After 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3, Black can continue with 5.... e6, Scheveningen Variation (B80) and prepares to castle kingside. With 6.g4, the Keres Attack, White intends to drive away the black knight with g5. If Black plays 6...h6, White has discouraged Black from castling kingside, and may later play Bg2.

White can also play 6.Be2 and the position with 6...a6, is a transposition of KAN with d6 or Nadjdorf with e6. The game can continue with 7.0-0 Be7 8.f4 0-0 or 7.O-O Qc7 8.f4 Nc6

Other White alternatives are 6.Be3 and 6.f4.

So KAN players must be familiar with following openings due to transposition possibilities :
